How to Calculate Time Duration
Subtract the start time from the end time. If the minutes of the end time are smaller, borrow an hour (60 minutes) first. For example, from 9:40 AM to 5:15 PM: 5:15 PM is 17:15, so 17:15 − 9:40 = 7 hours 35 minutes.
When a period crosses midnight, include the date. Without it, 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM looks negative; with the next day’s date it is correctly 8 hours.
For timesheets and billing, decimal hours are easier to multiply: divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 7 hours 35 minutes is 7.58 hours.

How do I calculate the hours between two times?
Enter a start and an end date and time. The calculator subtracts one from the other and shows the result in days, hours, minutes and seconds, plus the total in hours (with decimals), minutes and seconds.
How do I calculate an overnight shift?
Set the end date to the next day. For example, 10:00 PM on Monday to 6:00 AM on Tuesday is 8 hours.
Does it handle daylight saving time?
Yes. It measures real elapsed time in your own time zone, so a night when the clocks change is correctly one hour shorter or longer.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. For example, 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours. The “total hours” tile does this for you, which is handy for timesheets.
